Çınar Sokağı'nda Yürüyüş

Aşağıdaki tablo kısa bir sokağın iki yanını gösteriyor. Numaralar kapı numarası:

Reçetesindeki ilacı almak isteyen biri nereye gider? Eczaneye, yani No. 2'deki chemist's'e. Sokakta bir park var mı? Var: "There is a park on Çınar Street." Kaç dükkân var? Fırın, eczane ve kırtasiye: "There are three shops."

İlk cümlede is, ikincide are kullandık. Neden? Çünkü "a park" tek, "three shops" birden çok.

There Is ve There Are

• There is + tekil isim → There is a bus stop near my house.
• There are + çoğul isim → There are 2 cinemas in our town.
• Olumsuz → There isn't a hospital. · There aren't any museums.
• Soru → Is there a bank? · Are there any cafés?

Sayılamayan isimler (milk, bread, water, money) tekil sayılır: "There is some milk in the fridge." Olumsuzu: "There isn't any milk." (Hiç süt yok.) "There aren't any milk" yanlıştır, çünkü süt sayılamaz.

Some olumlu cümlede, any olumsuz cümle ve soruda gelir. Mini soru: "Are there ___ parks near here?" boşluğuna ne gelir? Soru cümlesi olduğu için "any".

Tabloya geri dönün ve şu cümleleri kontrol edin:

(1) The library is between the bakery and the post office.
(2) The chemist's is opposite the bakery. (karşısında)
(3) The park is next to the chemist's. (yanında)
(4) The stationer's is near the park. (yakınında)

"Next to" bitişik demektir; "near" yakında ama arada başka bir şey olabilir. Okulun tam yanındaki kırtasiyeden söz ediyorsanız doğru ifade "next to the school" olur.

Yol Tarifi: Emir Cümleleriyle

Yol tarif ederken özne kullanılmaz, fiil başa gelir:

• Go straight on. (Düz git.)
• Turn left / Turn right. (Sola / sağa dön.)
• Take the second street on the left. (Soldaki ikinci sokağa gir.)
• Stop at the traffic lights. (Trafik ışıklarında dur.)
• It's on your right. (Sağ tarafında.)

Yol sormak: "Excuse me, how can I get to the museum?" ya da "Where is the post office?" Yayaların yeşil ışığı beklediği yer traffic lights, otobüs beklenen yer bus stop, kaldırım pavement.

Alışveriş Merkezinde Katlar

Katlar sıra sayısıyla söylenir: first, second, third, fourth. Film izlemek isteyen grup kaçıncı kata çıkar? "The cinema is on the third floor." Kattan önce on gelir.

Mini Diyalog: Defter Kaç Lira?

Customer: Excuse me, how much is this notebook?
Shop assistant: It's 45 liras.
Customer: And how much are these pens?
Shop assistant: They're 20 liras each.
Customer: OK, I'll take the notebook and 2 pens, please.

Tekil eşya için "How much is…?", çoğul için "How much are…?" Toplam kaç lira? 45 + 2 × 20 = 85 lira.

I live in a quiet neighbourhood in Eskişehir. There is a small park opposite my house. There are two bakeries, but there isn't a cinema. The nearest cinema is in the shopping centre, 3 kilometres away. My school is next to the library. I walk there in 10 minutes.

(1) Is there a cinema in the neighbourhood? (2) Where is the park? (3) How long is the walk to school? · Cevaplar: (1) No, there isn't. (2) Opposite the writer's house. (3) 10 minutes.

Bu Ünitede En Çok Yapılan Hata

Sık yapılan hata: çoğul isimle "there is" kurmak. "There is two schools" cümlesinde fiil ile isim uyuşmuyor; doğrusu "There are two schools". Kulağa gelen ilk sözcük "there" olduğu için öğrenciler fiili isme göre değil alışkanlığa göre seçiyor.

İkinci yanılgı: "opposite" ile "next to"yu aynı sanmak. Next to aynı sıradaki komşu binadır; opposite yolun karşı tarafıdır.

Sınav İpucu ve Alıştırma

Diyalogda yol tarifi soruluyorsa tarifte geçen sıra sayısını ("second street") ve yönü ("left") seçeneklerle tek tek eşleştirin; çeldiriciler genellikle bunlardan birini değiştirir.
