Üç Cümle, Üç Kutu
Şu üç cümle aynı konudan, uzaydan söz ediyor ama üç farklı yapı kullanıyor:
(1) The Earth goes round the Sun. (Dünya Güneş'in çevresinde döner.)
(2) I am going to visit the planetarium next Saturday. (Önümüzdeki cumartesi
planetaryumu ziyaret edeceğim.)
(3) I think people will live on Mars one day. (Bence insanlar bir gün Mars'ta yaşayacak.)
Birinci cümle hiç değişmeyen bir bilimsel gerçek: geniş zaman. İkincisi önceden kararlaştırılmış bir plan: be going to. Üçüncüsü kesin olmayan bir tahmin: will. Bu anlatımın geri kalanı bu üç kutuyu doldurmak.

"Mercury is the first planet from the Sun." Güneş'e en yakın gezegen Merkür. "The Earth goes round the Sun in 365 days." "The Moon goes round the Earth." Bu cümlelerde "goes" -es aldı, çünkü özne tekil.

Yapı: am / is / are + going to + yalın fiil.

"We are going to join the science fair next month." · "I am going to go to space camp next summer." Büyüyünce ne olmak istediğinizi de bu yapıyla söyleyebilirsiniz: "I am going to be an astronaut." Soru: "What are you going to do at the weekend?"
Üçüncü Kutu: Tahminler
Geleceği tahmin ederken will + yalın fiil kullanılır. Kesin olmadığını göstermek için başa I think, maybe, probably eklenir:
- I think cars will fly in 2050.
- Maybe robots will cook our meals.
- People won't use paper books. (won't = will not)

Ada is 12 years old and she loves space. She has got a small telescope. Every night she looks at the stars. Next year she is going to join a space club at school. She thinks people will travel to Mars in the future. "I am going to be the first Turkish woman on Mars!" she says.

Sık Yapılan Hata
Sık yapılan hata: "going to" yapısında am/is/are'ı unutmak: "I going to study" eksiktir, doğrusu "I am going to study". Ayrıca "going to"dan sonra fiil yalın kalır; "going to studying" yanlıştır.
İkinci yanılgı: bilimsel gerçeği "will" ile kurmak. "The Earth will go round the Sun" demek bu olayın henüz olmadığını ima eder; Dünya zaten dönüyor, bu yüzden geniş zaman: "The Earth goes round the Sun."

Soru kökündeki ipucu sözcüğe bakın: "değişmeyen gerçek" → geniş zaman; "planlamaktadır" → going to; "kesin olmayan tahmin" → I think + will.
