Taslak 1: "This Essay Is About Phones"
Duru'nun İngilizce öğretmeni 400 sözcüklük bir deneme istedi: "Should schools collect students' phones at the gate?" Duru'nun ilk giriş paragrafı şöyle bitiyor:
"This essay is about phones. Phones are very bad and everybody knows it. I think they should be banned."
Öğretmen kenara tek not yazmış: "Where is your thesis?" Oysa son cümle bir görüş bildiriyor. Sorun nerede?
|---|---|
| This essay is about phones. | zayıf: yalnızca konuyu söylüyor |
| Phones are bad. | zayıf: gerekçe yok, fazla genel |
| Collecting phones at the gate may improve concentration, but it removes a safety tool for families.
(1) In 2023, a study of 1,200 students found that... (geçmişte bitti, tarih var: simple past)
(2) Since 2024, 14 schools in the city have introduced phone lockers. (since: present perfect)
(3) At the moment, the ministry is reviewing the rules. (şu an: present continuous)
(4) Research shows that attention drops after interruptions. (genel doğru: simple present)
(5) By 2030, most schools will have adopted some kind of phone policy. (by + gelecek: future perfect)
(6) Before the lockers were installed, teachers had confiscated 40 phones a week. (geçmişin geçmişi: past perfect)
Mini soru: "Two years ago, the school ___ (introduce) a new rule." ago kesin bir geçmiş anı gösterir; cevap "introduced". "has introduced" yazmak, 12. sınıf sınavlarında hâlâ en sık kaybedilen puanlardandır.
Kanıt Kadar Konuşmak: Hedging
3. taslakta öğretmen bir cümleyi daha işaretliyor: "This research proves that phones destroy students' concentration." Tek bir araştırma bir şeyi "kanıtlamaz"; akademik dilde iddia, kanıtın gücünü aşmamalıdır. Düzeltilmiş hâli: "This research suggests that phones may reduce concentration."
Temkin araçları: may, might, could · suggest, indicate · appear to, tend to · It can be argued that... · likely, possibly. Akademik metinde kısaltma da kullanılmaz: "doesn't" yerine "does not", "can't" yerine "cannot".
Despite, However, Although
Sık yapılan hata: "Despite of the difficulties, we finished the project." despite kendi başına edattır, of almaz. "In spite of" ise of ile kullanılır. İkisinin de ardından isim ya da -ing gelir, tam cümle gelmez: "Despite having little time, Duru rewrote the essay."
Tam cümleyle karşıtlık için although kullanılır: "Although the first draft was clear, it lacked evidence." The first draft was clear; however, it lacked supporting evidence."
Not only were the results surprising, but they also changed the plan." Not only başa gelince yardımcı fiil özneden önce gelir (were the results).
Akran Geri Bildirimi
Mert: I completely disagree with your first point.
Duru: Fair enough. Which part do you find weakest, the evidence or the reasoning?
Mert: The evidence. You cite one study from 2023 and nothing else.
Duru: You're right. I should have checked more sources before the deadline.
Son cümledeki "should have checked" geçmişe dönük pişmanlıktır: kaynakları kontrol etmesi gerekiyordu, etmedi.
Okuma Parçası
"In a 6-week trial, 2 groups studied the same biology unit. One group reread their notes; the other closed their notebooks and wrote down everything they could remember. In the final test, the second group scored 23 points higher on average. The researchers note, however, that both groups were small."
Soru: Parçaya göre hangi sonuç çıkarılabilir? Hatırlamaya çalışarak çalışmak (retrieval practice) yeniden okumaktan daha etkili görünüyor; ama son cümle, sonucun temkinle okunması gerektiğini söylüyor. "proves" içeren bir şık bu parçayla çelişir.
YDT İpucu ve Mini Etkinlik
YDT'de paragraf tamamlama sorularında boşluktan sonraki cümle "however", "therefore" ya da "for example" ile başlıyorsa, doğru şık o bağlacın mantığına uyan cümledir: however karşıtlık, therefore sonuç, for example somut bir örnek ister.
Konuyu değil iddiayı söyler ve gerekçesini taşır: "Collecting phones may improve concentration, but it removes a safety tool."
Akademik yazımda neden "proves" yerine "suggests" kullanılır?
Tek bir araştırma bir şeyi kesin kanıtlamaz; iddia kanıtın gücünü aşmamalıdır. Buna hedging denir.
"Despite of" neden yanlış?
despite of almaz; "despite the difficulties" ya da "in spite of the difficulties" denir.
